Donald Watkins, who arrived in March 2021, wrote positively about his experience: "FCI LaTuna operates in a very professional manner... Every issue I raised with the staff at LaTuna was addressed and resolved in the most professional manner and on a prompt basis."
Watkins noted that "LaTuna's Health Services Department operates at a level of professionalism and medical expertise that equals or exceeds the standard of care provided by private healthcare providers."
Bob Jones, an El Paso businessman who transferred in 2011, described conditions as "far more what I expected of prison—food, guards, management bureaucracy." His letters were published by the El Paso Times as "Letters from La Tuna."
The facility's Spanish-mission style architecture, built in 1932, reflects the Southwestern environment with scenic mountain views. Notable former inmates include George Jung, whose life was profiled in the Johnny Depp film "Blow."
