Rapper Kodak Black served time at USP Thomson Camp before being pardoned in 2021 by President Trump. He was transferred there following a lawsuit against USP Big Sandy officials alleging emotional and physical abuse.
The facility was converted from high-security to low-security in 2023 after serious incidents. Former Warden Bergami described finding "an enormous problem with inmate abuse" on his first day, including falsified charges and prisoners kept in restraints so tight they left scars called "The Thomson tattoo."
A site visit report noted that "inmates of color are terrified of the correctional officers."
Officials have struggled with staffing—in May 2021, over 30% of correctional officer positions were unfilled. The village of Thomson has fewer than 1,000 residents.
The facility now operates as FCI Thomson at low security.
