A Vice article from a former inmate who was transferred to USP Canaan described the environment: "Canaan was a miserable compound. Half the inmates there had zero privileges. Something that wouldn't have even been looked at twice in Pollock would cost you years worth of good time."
Pennsylvania lawmakers have called the main facility "one of the most dangerous penitentiaries in the country"—at least four murders have occurred since opening.
In June 2011, 300 inmates and several staff members became ill after eating chicken in the prison dining room.
The camp houses approximately 65 inmates in dormitories, offering vocational training in Horticulture and apprenticeships in Electrical.
The camp focuses on rehabilitative rather than punitive measures, with programs including GED courses, anger management, and recreational activities.
