Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell (born December 25, 1961) is a British former socialite and convicted sex trafficker who was found guilty of recruiting and grooming underage girls for sexual abuse by the financier Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell was a longtime associate and former girlfriend of Epstein, and prosecutors established that she played a central role in his abuse of minors over a period of more than a decade. In June 2022, she was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison. Maxwell is currently incarcerated at FCI Tallahassee in Florida.

After her father's death in November 1991 under mysterious circumstances—his body was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean near his yacht—Maxwell moved to New York City. There she became romantically involved with Jeffrey Epstein and established herself in Manhattan's elite social circles. She was known for her contacts with royalty, celebrities, and prominent business figures.

Indictment, Prosecution, and Sentencing

The Crimes

Federal prosecutors established that between approximately 1994 and 2004, Maxwell helped Epstein recruit, groom, and sexually abuse multiple underage girls. Maxwell's role included befriending victims, gaining their trust, normalizing sexual topics and behavior, and being present during sexual encounters involving Epstein and minors. Some victims testified that Maxwell herself participated in sexual abuse.

She was charged with six federal counts, including conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, enticement of a minor to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, and two counts of perjury related to testimony in a 2016 civil deposition.

Trial and Conviction

Maxwell's trial took place in November and December 2021 in U.S. District Court in Manhattan before Judge Alison Nathan. Four women testified about their experiences of being groomed and abused by Maxwell and Epstein when they were minors. The defense argued that prosecutors were using Maxwell as a scapegoat for Epstein's crimes following his death. On December 29, 2021, the jury found Maxwell guilty on five of six counts, including the most serious charge of sex trafficking of a minor.

Sentencing

On June 28, 2022, Judge Nathan sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in federal prison, rejecting defense arguments for a lighter sentence. The judge noted that Maxwell's crimes were "heinous and predatory" and that she had "worked with Epstein to select young victims who were vulnerable." Maxwell was also ordered to pay $750,000 in fines.

Prison Experience

Following her arrest, Maxwell was held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn under conditions that her attorneys characterized as extraordinarily harsh, including frequent cell checks that disrupted her sleep. She was transferred to FCI Tallahassee, a low-security federal correctional institution in Florida, following her sentencing.

Maxwell's projected release date, accounting for potential good time credits, is in the late 2030s. She has filed an appeal of her conviction, arguing prosecutorial misconduct and errors in jury selection.
