Jeff Smith, a former Missouri state senator who served eight months at FCI Manchester in 2009-2010, wrote about his experience for Inc. magazine, providing a rare first-person account of life at the facility.
In February 2018, Eastern Kentucky University reached an agreement with the prison allowing criminal justice students to take classes alongside inmates—a unique rehabilitative partnership.
The camp offers specialized vocational training in Horticulture and Hydroponics, in addition to standard Culinary Arts programs available at both the FCI and camp.
While the camp originally had four dormitories, two have been closed, leaving inmates housed in two-person cubicles within the remaining structures.
