FMC Carswell (minimum-security camp)
Notes from Alumni
- FMC Carswell is the only federal medical facility for women in the Bureau of Prisons, opened in 1994 on the former Carswell Air Force Base.
- The ACLU of Texas reported that "time in Carswell's prison medical facility can be a death sentence for women prisoners." Inmate witnesses said that "in the days leading up to deaths at the facility, some women repeatedly begged prison medical personnel for help, but neither received it."
- A former inmate stated: "The medical officer always sent them back untreated."
- The facility was significantly affected by COVID-19, with one of the highest infection rates among all federal prisons and at least four deaths.
- The camp offers unique programs including Assisting Canine Companions by Enhancing Service Skills (dog training) and the Sharing Hope About Recovery Experiences program.
