- USP Marion was renamed to FCI Marion in 2024 after being downgraded from high to medium security. It was originally designed to replace Alcatraz and once housed high-profile offenders like John Gotti.
- The camp opened in 1971 and houses approximately 160 inmates in dormitories divided into two-person cubicles.
- Camp residents sometimes provide labor support for the main institution, but minimum-security prisoners never mix with higher-security inmates.
- The facility is now designated as a Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP) facility. In 2011, News One named USP Marion one of the ten most notorious prisons in the United States.
