A DC Corrections Information Council inspection (2018) documented inmate concerns: "The environment is very racist toward people of color. The white staff evidently haven't been raised among people of color. The medical care is the worst."
Inmates also reported sanitation issues: "There are mice running around in the chow hall while we're eating and running around in the light fixtures."
Inmates with life sentences told inspectors they couldn't access programming because staff prioritized people with less time remaining. The warden noted difficulty getting volunteers due to the facility's remote location.
The McDowell County Animal Shelter sends dogs to FCI McDowell and FPC Alderson as part of a program to train and socialize shelter animals before adoption.
Former Trenton Mayor Tony F. Mack served a 58-month sentence here for bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and extortion.
