Notes from Alumni

  • A Washington City Paper report described conditions: "Prisoners are hungry. Violence is everywhere. The warden's policy of collective punishment... has weaponized the prison's cafeteria food and commissary privileges."
  • One inmate described that when arriving on the yard, "the first thing to grab my attention was just how depressed and raggedy the men appeared."
  • At least one man died inside USP McCreary since November 2023—reportedly his body remained in his bunk for 72 hours before guards noticed.
  • Those in solitary confinement face unsanitary conditions leading to "staph infection, nail fungi and hepatitis C" and cannot access the commissary or possess radios.
  • The camp houses approximately 40 inmates in dormitories and offers apprenticeships in Auto Mechanics, Cook, Landscape Management, and Welding—distinct from the main facility's troubled environment.
