Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery (FPC Montgomery) is a minimum-security United States federal prison for male inmates located on the grounds of Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. Opened in 1930, it is the oldest federal prison camp in operation.

Overview

FPC Montgomery is a minimum-security federal prison camp housing male offenders. The facility is a Medical Care Level 2 prison, meaning it can accommodate inmates with moderate medical needs. As of 2025, the facility houses approximately 358 inmates.

To qualify for FPC Montgomery, inmates must not have committed a violent crime and must have less than ten years remaining on their sentence. Approximately one-third of inmates at FPC Montgomery are white-collar criminals.

The facility's three housing units allow inmates to live in a dormitory setting in two-person cubicles instead of the traditional cell structure.

Notes from Alumni

  • Forbes (2009), CNBC (2012), and Insider Monkey (2017) have all named FPC Montgomery among the "cushiest" or "easiest" federal prisons in America, citing its location on Maxwell Air Force Base and relatively comfortable conditions for a federal facility.
  • Prison consultant Christopher Zoukis noted that approximately one-third of inmates are white-collar criminals, and the facility provides work for about 400 inmates at Maxwell Air Force Base including "grass trimming, landscaping, equipment cleaning, and equipment repair."
  • The facility offers the IMPACT Program (Inmates Providing Animal Care and Training), in which inmates raise puppies to become service dogs for Canine Companions for Independence.
